MBO: Management By Objectives And You

MBO has changed a lot over the yrs and it’s a good approach to management. It may look simple at first, but it requires experience and skill to make it work effectively. When you prepare goals on observable, measurable terms,Clerical Business Solutions~Virtual Assistant & Business Strategy Consulting then the goals become objectives. Then the objectives become the stated measurable targets of how to achieve business aims.

They help to give the business a clearly defined target. For example, you could say that XYZ corporation wants to achieve 3 million in asian markets by 2015.

MBO is focused on accomplishment of company objectives, it stresses achieving results with planning as the dominant function; like plan your work & work your plan. It does take patients, organization, work, follow-through & tracking to be successful.

When implementing mbo, start with yourself.  Have yourself in check before correcting others. Know what to do, how to do it & get it done. Self control is a tool for effectiveness.  Better self management of your time, establish prioritizes by putting first things first, such as the work & decisions that you can handle. Leverage the resources of others by delegating & outsourcing non-core functions to a Virtual Assistant.

Management by objectives can be utilized in a business to help focus on goal planning, moving an organization forward & improving your business culture. It may not be so outdated as some like to think. Dealing with the complexities of business management is inevitable.

Strive to do better than your current contribution, be able to adapt to change. build on opportunities to enhance your abilities and performance further.

There are pros and cons to mbo as well as challenges and benefits.  Among some organizations it’s become a fad; they try it, drop it then move on to the next “big” thing. A performance improvement program can contribute to the overall business performance, which can help with mbo.

To utilize mbo effectively, managers need to identify and set objectives both for themselves, their units, and their organizations. When writing business objectives; do it the S.M.A.R.T way:

Specific – state exactly what is to be achieved.

Measurable – what gets measured, gets done. An objective should be measurable; like being able to track what you’ve done so far to see if you’re moving in the right direction.

Achievable – the objective should be realistic given the circumstances in which it is set and the resources available to the business.

Relevant – objectives should be relevant to the people responsible for achieving them

Time Bound – have realistic time-frames/ deadlines in mind and written.

When you set a clear objective, you and/ or others are able to focus attention and energy on a concrete aim, anything from a small task to a career ambition. No matter how small or large the objective is, ensure that the decisions you make and the activities you undertake all support the achievement of your chosen goal.

MBO programs should include commitment and participation in the process at all levels, from top management to the lowest position in the organization.~Clerical Business Solutions

I Want To Start My Business Now

Congratulations on wanting to start your new business!! Now that you’ve made up your mind to start your new business venture, it’s time to start moving forward. Starting a new business begins with a thought & an action plan, mostly a strategic plan. Where are you going with this?

Starting a new business is an empowering and uplifting event. But in the startyeswereopen up phase of your business you must proceed with caution, ’cause there are so many things to consider. Start with a strategic business plan to help get you through and you can modify the plan as you go along.

There have been many successful businesses that have started with little to no pre-planning at all and they have succeeded quite well and they continue to succeed. Sometimes that may not be the case for everyone. I’m not saying don’t go for it and start your business but don’t rush into business too soon without careful thought, planning and preparation.

There IS NO SUBSTITUTE for a well prepared business plan and there ARE NO SHORTCUTS to creating it!

Many start-ups start and fail all within the first five years. Many of them fail within the first 6 months to 1 year. You have to take into consideration many aspects of business such as financing, where to start your business, business structure (sole proprietorship, llc, corporation etc…)

    • Also do you really have what it takes to start a business or even operate one?
    • Do you need the help of investors?
    • Have you done your research on what you want to pursue?
    • Do you have the stamina to go through with it all?
    • Will your type of business be successful?
    • Do you have any pre-planning steps?
    • Is there a market for your type of business?

There is so much to think about when starting and maintaining a business. Starting is one thing but maintenance is the most important.

I say go for the gusto and start your business but proceed with caution and seek out sound advice preferably from a business consultant. For many, having business consulting advice can lead you into the right direction Sometimes the advice and/ or support from friends, family or associates might not hurt.

Do you have the support of friends and/ or family members? Not all friends and family members will be supportive of your ideas. Many times you don’t even need their support.

So then you have to decide whether or not to start with or without their support or even tell them about your new venture. As passionate as entrepreneurs must be to drive start-ups forward, they also know when to cut losses (hint, hint).

You need to have a good action plan, you know, a good strategy as to how to go about your new business venture, such as your goals, budget and marketing. You need to spend time working on your business strategy action plan. You need sound implementation steps & then put them into action.

You also need to review what has been achieved so far and make note of the good and bad steps that you have taken. When you make note of things, you can track your progress, you’ll learn from your mistakes and learn to do things better. Now on your mark, get set, go start your business!!!

        Hi Sharon,

You’re welcome, I’m glad that you found them informative. Many wanna-be entrepreneurs and current business owners tend to want to rush things and never give any consideration to planning or they give too little thought to planning and researching their new business venture.

They just dive right in and then later on down the line, they wonder what went wrong.

That’s why I stress to my clients about having strategic plans & goals. You can’t go wrong with strategic planning.

        Hi Peter,

Many people never develop strategic thinking or planning to help them in their business endeavors. It’s good to have a plan of direction & implementation for what you are trying to accomplish.

Wise Entrepreneurs Have A Business Plan

Starting on a business plan can seem like a daunting task and then you have to get the motivation to get started. But once you get goingbusiness you’ll find that writing the plan is not as tough as it seems. You need to have a plan to give you direction and a firm foundation to start on.

It’s like driving a car; you need directions in order to get to where you want to go, or you could get lost.

For a wise entrepreneur, having a business plan is one major step in the right direction. The planning process is the most important, then you have the actual implementation that you have to stick to in order to make it work.

You prioritize, set your goals, create a mission statement & set implementation steps that’s all in strategic planning. Ask yourself “Where do I see me in five yrs?”

Business planning is usually conducted when starting a new organization or a new major venture, for example, new product, service or program. Essentially, a business plan is a combination of a marketing plan, strategic plan, operational/ management plan and a financial plan.

You need to develop a strategy for your business plan. While it may be easy to select a smart-sounding strategy for your plan, I recommend you give a lot of thought to the strategy that will set the course for your business.

Sitting down looking at a blank computer screen as you prepare to start your business plan can be daunting. You may want to look at an alternative that can help to make the process a bit easier. Look into hiring a professional such as a strategic business planning service to assist you in your business planning needs.

A professional business consultant can help you to create a business plan suited for your needs, but you still have to be prepared to think through your business, while working with a consultant and understand the underlying concepts in your business idea.

The best way to show bankers, venture capitalists, and angel investors that you are worthy of financial support is to show them a great business plan. Make sure that your plan is clear, focused and realistic. Then show them that you have the tools, talent and team to make it happen.

Your business plan is like your calling card, it will get you in the door where you’ll have to convince investors and loan officers that you can put your plan into action.

    Less Is The New More…Right?

There is so much that can be said about our busy lives. To accomplish more, to be more, to do more. In the business world everything is moving so fast and people are trying to just do more to get ahead. But at what cost? Have you thought things through in your efforts to get ahead? Sometimes you have to do more to get ahead and sometimes you have to do less and work with what you have. 20% of your results come from 80% of your efforts.

So, in your business where are you

spending most of your time & effort, hmmm…..?

That’s when you have to apply the 80/ 20 principle. It is a useful benchmarking tool that helps you to identify the areas in your business where you should be putting your main focus then outsourcing the rest. The 80/ 20 principle helps you to do more with less by identifying the areas where you are spending too much of your time & effort and areas where you should spend less time & effort.

It lets you know where the imbalance in your business or projets are. The imbalance between inputs & outputs, causes & consequences, effort & result, output or rewards. Once you realize this, you & your team will know where to put your focus then you can delegate and outsource the rest. You can utilize external service providers & consultants such as a business strategy consultant or virtual assistant  as your provider for many things except for your core focus.

Core skills should be focused in-house.  Many support services such as business strategy consulting or Virtual Assistance, helps you to streamline your processes, making it easier for you and your staff to focus on your core competencies and get back to doing what you love most. When your business is overloaded with many tasks, it can make you all lose sight of your main focus. In addition to that it can lead to not maintaining or having a concrete strategy to deal with things.

Not having a strategic plan or not maintaining your plan only limits you from reaching out to do more for yourself and your business. Trying to do too many things to achieve your business goals can lead to lack of focus & help to lessen the quality of your services, products & productivity.

In your effort to do more for your business; be selective, not exhaustive.  Figure out where 20% of effort can lead to 80% of returns. Strive for excellence in a few areas, rather than great in several areas. Strive to do things that you are best at doing then delegate and outsource the rest. Exercise control with the least possible effort. Take time out to utilize the 80/ 20 principal to carefully look at the different aspects of your business to help you redirect your strategy.

Once you take this step, you may pretty much find that you are doing too many things for too many people. Utilizing this principle is of enormous value in identifying the next steps forward for your business or projects. 80/ 20 thinking applied to your daily life, business, projects and goals can help you to change your behavior to concentrate on the most important 20%. Taking action from the 80 / 20 thinking should lead you to achieve much more with less.

When Trouble Comes Knocking At Your Door

Once you get your business up and running, you may feel like you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the good times to come. Well getting a business started is a battle in itself. Just about every other month, day or week you’lltrouble_with_business_accounts_1 read about or see a business dealing with a crisis. Whether it’s a public relations crisis or serious equipment failures etc… At some point in your business you’ll have to deal with some sort of crisis.

That’s when crisis management comes into play. Crisis management is an important part of managing a business. No business is immune to a crisis. A crisis may hit an organization in the shape of public relations, terrorist attack, industrial accidents, product recall, natural calamity, etc…. Crisis management is closely linked to public relations where a company’s image and pride are at stake.

You’ve got to have a strategic plan ready, your game face on & be ready to tackle these issues. Having a game plan before hand will help you to see your way through. Just like having a business plan before starting a business, having a crisis management plan before a crisis hits, is the way to go.

You always need a strategic plan for your business from start up throught daily management. How can you make it without a definitive strategy? Well not very long if you don’t have it together. How you manage your business on a daily basis, along with strategically preplanning for a crisis will determine if you will come out on top in the end.

Have you ever thought about working with a strategic business management company? If not you should give it a go because a strategic business management company that has your best interest at heart can help you to navigate your way through the rough waters of business development through daily management.

    That’s It… I Only Get 24 Hours A Day?!

In 24 hrs there are only so many hours that you can work. From my recollection & doing a little math……yep, that’s right you only get 24 hrs in a day. You may have a42-15529727 lot of work to do and want to get it all done but you can only do so much in a typical work day. You can’t possibly work a whole 24 hrs straight. Or could you? Or are you trying to? You might be able to squeeze out a good 8, 10 or even 16 hours to get your work done.

Seems like no one has been able to get more than 24 hours a day so you have to make the best use of your time. How will you organize your time & your day to be more productive? Time can be a real monster when it starts to slip away. When you try to pile too much work into your work day, thinking that you can get it all done, you tend to loose control & time slips right by you.

With a limited amount of hours that you work in, you only have so much time to get things done, on time & not to mention, correctly. Once you become bombarded with your daily work schedule & things start to pile up, you see that you really don’t have all 24 hrs to work in.

Yeah there’s one thing such as pulling an “all nighter”, but really, how many times can you continue to do that and still remain successful and productive? Come on now, really how can you? Sometimes you just got to bite the bullet and reach out for assistance. Getting assistance to help you manage your daily workload with your business or projects is a great way to go. Well, what kind of assistance you may ask? Well getting assistance in the form of outsourcing. Outsourcing assistance doesn’t take away from your business, it only adds to your business and helps you to be more productive.

Working with a beneficial outsourcing firm such as Clerical Business Solutions can assist you in becoming more productive in your day, help you with your business management and help you to reduce your time from becoming an “all nighter”. You only have a set amount of time in your day to get things done. Trying to pull 24 hour days is bad for business and your health.

So come on in the door is open, step into my humble abode and take a load off. Relax your mind & see how well that you & Clerical Business Solutions can work together.

Now Exactly…Where Are We Going With This?

You are on the road to no where & you haven’t got a clue as to what direction to take your project into next? You’ve tried one direction or another. If you

bigstockphoto_Crossroad_404579want to succeed in your projects or business, you need to come up with some sort of strategic plan. A strategic plan gives you clear direction, focus and keeps you from straying from the path.

To give direction to your project plans or business, you need to develop a strategic plan. In the developmental & working stages it is very important for you to be realistic.

It’s important for everyone to work together as a cohesive unit to achieve success. If you are working by yourself, you’ve got to maintain focus, stick to a strategic plan or seek assistance. If you have a team, try to see if you all can come on common ground to work together so that all of you can perform as one.

It can be hard to take an honest look at how things are going and the ways in which you can improve your project or business outlook. When planning for success your goals should be high, but achievable. With any business or project, you need to a have clear, well defined directions.

How will you know if you’ve gotten there

if you don’t know where you’re going?

Sometimes people do things haphazardly, just hoping that it’ll all work it’s way out. That’s not a good way to do things. Sometimes that can show a lack of preparation, forethought, or not having the ability or skills to accomplish the task at hand. Project management includes developing a strategic project plan that includes:

    • defining and confirming the project goals and objectives
    • identifying tasks and how goals will be achieved
    • quantifying the resources needed
    • determining budgets and timelines for completion

A big key to project planning & success is IMPLEMENTATION. When you have that follow through with each step and rechecking as you go, you can reach completion and success. It also includes managing the implementation of the project plan, along with operating regular ‘controls’ to ensure that there is accurate and objective information on ‘performance’ relative to the plan, and the mechanisms to implement recovery actions where necessary.

Everyone should be clear on the roles that they are expected to play. There should be a clearly defined leadership role in managing projects. A leader is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and control for all aspects of the company’s activities in order to ensure effectiveness in organizations and in managing change.

Improve Your Strategy & Implementation For Success

It is the small business strategy that defines what approach and tactics you are going to adopt in running your company. In the absence of a well-defined and well-developed strategy, your small business is doomed.

6a00d8341c39e853ef00e5539d4b298834-800wiAccording to Fortune magazine, they estimated recently that about 70 percent of CEO failures are caused primarily not by flawed strategic thinking, but by failure to execute. Successful small business owners will be quick to tell you that it wasn’t dumb luck that allowed them to have a thriving business. In most cases, careful planning and the implementation of a business development strategy was involved.

Quite simply, strategic management is the act of developing and implementing a plan designed to achieve the objectives of your business. Although everyone has the same 24 hours in a day, poor management of that time keeps your business from reaching its full potential.

You need to finalize your strategies and tactics before you start your small business. This is the basic step of starting up. Many businesses are unsuccessful because they start without proper planning and strategy. You need a strategy for how you are going to properly operate your business on a daily basis, managing your time, your team, developing a strategy for your marketing efforts, etc…

Your business strategy should not just be thought of on a annual basis or even just written down on your business plan then put on a shelf. A business needs a strategic plan for every operation in the business. You need a strategic plan for everday/ a “to-do list” for starting & maintaing a business.  It’s not vision that makes a company successful. What sets the top performers apart is the organizational models that they develop to realize their aspirations.

In addition to having a business strategy, you need to have the drive to implement it, put your plans into action. Your business management strategy can be adjusted over time as your business grows but you really need a sound foundation to start off with. Without a daily or monthly strategic plan:

How will you know where you are going or if you got there?

There are many challenges that face every business. In many industries the strategic challenges are relatively clear and well understood by all players. Everyone needs to be involved as well as many other key players that help to keep your business afloat. You need to have all the strategies in place before you start, and you need to have a business strategy plan – an outline of the things you will be doing to ensure the success of your business.

Some things that you may want to consider in your planning is your marketing strategy, goals, customer service & how to keep those customers coming back. Take time out to review your plans to check your progress. Once you check your progress, you can tell what needs to be worked on or what needs a complete overhaul.

Many companies develop strategies that often fail to markedly improve market and financial performance. Many of us rarely ask ourselves the needed questions before we take on a project or make decisions. Such as :

    1. Why hasn’t myself or my team members been able to implement the prior strategy successfully?

    2. And why do we believe the new strategy will be implemented more successfully?

3.Why has the organization been unable to realize its current aspirations?

When you ask these questions, it sends the search for improvement in an entirely different direction (It also requires humility, which some might argue is in short supply among top management). It is usually not the vision or aspirations of a successful company that allow it to stand out. The goals of most companies such as more market share, more innovative new products, lower costs, etc. — are typically pretty similar for most firms in an industry. What sets the top performers apart is the “how” — the way they organize and operate to realize their aspirations.

Thus the answer to “Why haven’t we been able to do better?” usually lies in the organization itself or, more precisely, in the organizational model. Such as the internal structures, frameworks and operating practices that determine how work actually gets done in a company. Every successful business strategy plan needs goals to succeed. Without tangible goals, you’re just walking in the dark.

You need to have well-defined goals that can be achieved in a fixed length of time. These goals can be related to your turnover, profit, client base, etc.

For example, you can have a target of X amount of turnover in Y number of months. Similarly, you can have a target of increasing your customer base by X in Y number of months.

Having well defined goals & strategic planning, helps you to channel your resources more efficiently.

        Hi Tom,
You’re welcome, hope it helps. Many people have a struggle with follow through or which steps to take next. That’s why it’s always a good idea to have a plan when taking on a new project or working through a current project.

Taking the time out to think things through, developing your rough draft of a plan and then the final plans can help things to move in the right direction to reach completion for success.
